You guys! You guys! It’s National Doughnut Day!
DOUGHNUTS!!!
National Doughnut Day has been around for a long time, apparently. It’s not just a celebration of the most perfect breakfast food ever invented; it’s a tribute to the Doughnut Lassies of the Salvation Army. In 1917, Salvation Army volunteers in France made doughnuts for the World War I troops on the front lines. Some say this was the start of America’s love affair with doughnuts. The Salvation Army celebrated the first National Doughnut Day in 1938 to honor the Doughnut Lassies.
Today — literally TODAY — we can honor the troops of WWI and the Doughnut Lassies by picking up a free doughnut at a number of delicious spots. Refinery 29 has created a handy list that includes doughnut staples Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts. Check your local faves as well! Some of them may have specials going on for this important holiday.
So why are you still sitting here reading this? Get up! Grab your keys! Go get a doughnut!
